Exporting Process

All wine shipments in excess of 100 litres require export approval by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation (AWBC). For approval to be granted the following processes must be followed:

  • The Exporter must have an export licence.
  • The wine must be tested by the AWBC and found to be sound and merchantable.
  • Each individual shipment must have an export permit approved.

Further information on the wine export approval process can be found on the Australia Wine website.

In addition to the standard approval process for wine, bulk wine is also subject to some additional procedures. The following processes must be followed for bulk wine exports:

  • The consignee must be approved by the AWBC.
  • The exporter must adhere to the “Procedure for the preparation and transportation of bulk wine.”
  • The consignee may be required to provide two fully dressed samples of the final product for analysis and evaluation.

The Wine Australia website provides further information on the bulk wine approval process.

Bulk Wine Shipping Options

FLEXI-TANKS
A flexi-tank is a one-way bag used for transport of bulk wine, which is fitted inside a 20’ shipping container. Flexi-tanks are available in a range of sizes, however the most common and economical way of transporting bulk wine is in a 24,000 litre flexi-tank.

The composition and features of flexi-tanks can vary differently between suppliers. Most suppliers combine the supply of the flexi-tank with a freight forwarding service, which provide you with a total bulk wine transport solution. Austwine can assist by recommending reputable suppliers of flexi-tank services.

ISO-TANKS
An ISO-Tank is a tank container, which provides a safer and more reliable, yet more costly alternative to a flexi-tank. ISO-Tanks can vary is size from 24,000 litres to 26,000 litres, and can be reused over and over again. It should however be noted that due to road weight restrictions, larger capacity ISO-Tanks (25,000 & 26,000 litre) may not be allowed to travel on some Australian roads.

Wine Regions

The Australian wine industry is organised geographically into wine zones, wine regions and sub-regions. The Geographic Indications (GI) are integral to the marketing of wines and to protect the use of regional names. For a wine to carry a regional name, it must consist of at least 85% of fruit from that region. The following sites provide an informative look at Australian wine regions:
